Bitcoin: be your own bank

Een betaling versturen en ontvangen gaat met behulp van een bitcoinadres via het Bitcoin-netwerk. Dit is een peer-to-peer-netwerk, dus decentraal. Transacties tussen bitcoinadressen worden in het bitcoin-netwerk opgeslagen in een publiek transactielogboek. Om een betaling vanaf een bitcoinadres te doen moet een gebruiker met een geheime sleutel, horende bij dat bitcoinadres, aantonen dat het adres en de bijbehorende bitcoins (eigenlijk: eerdere transacties die op dat adres uitkomen) van hem zijn. Door het publieke ‘transactieboek’ zijn bitcointransacties in hoge mate traceerbaar, echter biedt het ook de optie voor privacy omdat een bitcoinadres in principe niet tot een persoon te herleiden hoeft te zijn.
