The price eased in the second half of last week as Mt. Gox, the largest Bitcoin exchange, was subject to an attack. Mt. Gox said it believed hackers aimed to “destabilise Bitcoin in general” as well as abuse the system for profit. “Attackers… wait for everybody to panic-sell their Bitcoins, wait for the price to drop to a certain amount… and start buying as much as they can,” it argued. However, Bitcoin recovered much of its losses to end the week trading at around $138, probably helped by mainstream attention. Created by a developer using a psuedonym in 2009, Bitcoin was intended to offer a means of payment that cuts out the banks through a “purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash [that] would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution”.
