The most fascinating part about this story is the link it shares with the video game world. Economists at Valve and CCP Games discuss their company's own virtual currencies here, and it's crazy to think that they actually need to keep special rules in place to prevent their in-game currencies from leaking out into the real world. Could an economy like EVE 's or Valve's actually affect the wider world? Almost certainly not, but as these economies get ever more popular it's going to be something people need to consider. These days it seems like the only thing preventing virtual worlds from becoming legitimate parts of the real world are the artificial regulations put in place by their own creators.
