Part of why national currencies are less volatile is that their is so much of them. US M1 is on the order of a couple of trillion USD and M2 is around 10 Trillion. It’s pretty hard to move that around unless you’re the Fed. The other reason is that everything in the economy — prices — is already denominated in them. Actually, though, things are a bit more volatile than people give them credit for. Oil and natural gas prices move enough to make people have to account for them, and in many countries of the world, food prices move enough to cause unrest. The Arab spring sparked when food prices spiked. To damp bitcoin’s volatility several things are needed: 1) The market cap needs to approach a sizable fraction of M1, meaning an individual bitcoin needs to increase in value by 50-100 times. It’s already increased by seven orders of magnitude, so on that basis alone, it’s not ...
