on rails events and decoupling

Ruby on rails events and decoupling: I'm new to Rails and have been trying to figure out how to structure my app...

I'm new to Rails and have been trying to figure out how to structure my applications. Coming from a Symfony2 background I am used to an event driven approach. Events allow for strong decoupling of components. Does Rails have framework events/hooks? What is the Rails approach to decoupling components that interact with each other? For example, if I created a user authentication component how would I allow for other components to subscribe to a user login "event" or user logout "event"? Model observers are great but what about events that have nothing to do with changing data (ie a user logout).
