Back in 2006 I stood and stared at a wall of messages at the first ever Rails Conf in Chicago. Someone had put up one of those sticky backed large pieces of paper (think huge sticky-note) and put some messages on it “Need help, $80 p/hr”, “CTO Needed” and so forth. Within hours there were a dozen of them full of writing. I knew it was time to create something. I had been struggling because I worked for a company I loved, but the travel was too much (I was on a plane every Monday returning home on Fridays). I looked around my town and realized that if I was going to want to work somewhere I was going to need to create it. That is when serendipity stepped in as I was pointed towards Ken Barker, a man who had also been inspired at the same conference.
