My first day trying to develop a web app: Seems like everything is poorly documented. What am I doing wrong?

I've been reading through Why's Poignant Guide, and Learn Ruby the Hard Way, and decided I wanted to try developing a basic web app. I was going to keep it simple, and just make a note-taking app that accepted a note that a user entered via a text field and POST'd via Javascript and write it to a database. I then decided to add an extra layer and have basic user signup/login/logout functionality via a gem as well, so that I could see whether it was as convenient to build functionality using gems as everyone says. I do a little bit of hunting around, and figure Sinatra would be ideal for a simple task like this, and it took about a minute to get the "hello world" text output working.
