According to a recent Freakonomics Podcast “Who Runs the Internet?” Clay Shirky, NYU Media professor, estimates that there are about 2 billion people connected to the internet. If you count the number of handset devices and modern uses of SMS technology, that number might be north of 3 billion. While your article suggests large numbers of people are switching to smartphone devices, I worry about those left behind as the pace of Bitcoin grows, effectively leaving people outside of the loop. Further, if Bitcoin truly does take off and large populations shift to digital currencies, potentially destabilizing fiat currencies, we effectively insulate commerce to those with internet access/smartphones.
